HOTmilk Lingerie on the catwalk

skinny models were the standard catwalk models that were available at the Sydney Lingerie show. HOTmilk usually have pregnant models in their shots. The pushchair in the background was the only way they could indicate they were baby related.

Annah Stretton

Yesterday I missed an opportunity to meet one of my mentors.  Well, I walked past her in real life, but didn’t think faster to say hello.

I have a bad case of shoulda, woulda, coulda – but Didn’t.

I still sent her an email, but gutted that I didn’t think faster and actually shake her hand!

She did reply to my email though which is very cool!

Thanks for the feedback Frances,  you should have said hi …..

 Merry Christmas !

funny gift card message

This is the funniest comment box I’ve ever had with a customer’s order:

How Did you Hear about Breastmates? “By accident while searching for porn.   Kidding.  Can't remember sorry, it was ages ago. I get the newsletter and joined the Facebook group, so it's one of the first places I think of for maternity/nursing paraphernalia

Message for Gift Card: “Dear [name removed]  Please treat yourself a gorgeous HotMilk nursing bra. Email Frances (Breastmates) if you need any advice, she's VERY helpful!!   Lots of love, [names removed]”

The funny thing about the gift card message, is that I have to write that myself.  I’m Frances and I’ll be writing a recommendation for myself on this present!!

Processing this order made me laugh.

Introductory Video

It was a bit of historical moment when this film crew came over and took this video of me.  It was done back in March 2009, so it has dated a bit now and my son has grown a lot bigger.

Now you can see the face behind the webpages!!

HOT Milk History

HOTmilk pictorial history of all the gorgeous maternity bras and underwear I’ve been selling for the past few years.  I should write a blog about all the gift card messages too, so funny!!

You can see this HOTmilk summary here

Copy Safe

School holidays have started, so it’s a change for me to have a child home while I am working.  When my business first started, I was a Work-at-home-Mum but that was five years ago.  I’ve grown a lot since then, and although it was a tough decision I know that putting my children into childcare was the right decision.

My eldest started school in October, and so now he is home for 7 weeks for the holidays.  Its cool having my buddy here with me.  I’ve set up a “special desk” for him in my office, and he is doing work.

Yesterday he did a picture plan, and wrote a sentence “I am working with my Mummy”.  Cute.

This morning we played schools, I’m Mrs Broughton his teacher.  I watched while he drew a picture of Spiderman and wrote a story about it.  Then he did a © symbol in the corner.

I laughed!!!  He said “its so no one can copy my work”.

I didn’t teach him this.  Even though all MY Breastmates work and my pictures are protected by Copy Safe.  (Its on the bottom corner of my website).

How adorable that my son knows this!!

I LOVE IT!!

PS> And before you judge his pictures and writing, it’s a miracle that he’ll even sit down with a pen.  This is the boy that likes being outside playing.

HOTmilk Confidence is Radiance

HOTmilk Lingerie style in the Confidence is Radiance style has now sold out.  We have a few pairs of knickers left, but the nursing bras have sold out.

This was a particularly favourite style of mine, it was funky and a little different in terms of the pattern.  I loved the styling and the confident bold pose of the model.  That’s why I had used the image in a lot of my marketing ads.

We have had a HOTmilk sale with up to 60% off to clear out these styles, making way for the new ones… which are just as gorgeous!  The new HOTmilk lingerie styles are in the “ever after” series and the themed photos have fairy tale settings.

I've had a boob job

This is the Boob Job product that I’ve been trialing over the past few days.  Ideal for mums that have finished breastfeeding, and just feel like having a bit of lift and more oomph!!

I’m just a measly 10A myself, and I like the extra volume that these silicone inserts provide.  They mould to your shape, and lift, boost and va va voom. I would happily recommend them to other mothers.

Small Size Bras - Limited Edition

Our current range of HOTmilk lingerie (2009) catered for the smaller cup /body sizes.  These included 8A, 8B, 8C, 8D, 8DD, 8E, 8F, 10A, 12A, 14A, 16A, 16B

Though unfortunately I have the official word that HOTmilk won’t be including these smaller sizes in the new garments that are coming next week  View HOTmilk New Styles 2010

HOTmilk say "We will be starting from size 10B from now on. The demand just isn't there to warrant us doing size 8's or A cups for the minimums we have to commit to for manufacturing.”

So if you are a smaller cup size – I suggest you grab what you can while we still have it.    Go to our store and use the Search By Bra size to see what we have for you:  http://www.breastmates.co.nz/store/

Her Desire was Dangerous

She Embraced the Moment

Cherry Bomb Chic

YES HOTmilk bras can also be worn by women that are neither pregnant or feeding  - they make gorgeous soft cup bras, and I know it can often be difficult to find these in the smaller sizes.  I’m speaking from experience here as I am personally a measly 10A.

BNZ Global Plus

Dear customers

Please note that if you are a BNZ or Global Plus credit card holder, many websites will now require you to use the Verified by Visa system.  This is an additional security measure that the banks have in place for your security.  When you are on a shopping cart, after you enter your credit card number on the secure page, then the Verified by Visa picture may come up on your screen (such as the picture attached).

Though remember, if you are ever shopping on any website and you don’t feel comfortable with credit card options etc, then PHONE the company before you place the order.

Online businesses such as Breastmates can process the transaction manually if you read out your card number over the phone.  This is the safest way if you are ever concerned about anything.

And just so you know about me, I actually enter the numbers while you are on the phone with me, I don’t even write them down on my note pad.

Now I just wish the banks would tell their customers that they have these security facilities active on the customers credit card!!

Breastmates Website

I got this wonderful email from a customer at 8.45pm tonight.  The only reason that I’m sharing it here is because at 9.10pm I got a phone call from someone that shook me up a bit.  But as @dom_sutton on twitter told me afterwards “u r learning that we can't get anywhere without pissing off some people & often it has little to do with you.”

So here are the nice words to finish on for today:

Kate R said “I will definitely be telling other people about your site, I wish I had known about it earlier!! It's easily the most simple, user friendly site I've come across for all things "mummy". The photos and videos of your products are great - really make you feel confident buying them online. I'm sure I will be back to buy more in the future too.

So I can do something right after all!!

Happy Customer

And I also wanted to thank you for the nursing t-shirts and HOTmilk Nursing Bra, all of which I have used already. I honestly don't know why I didn't get them sooner. I went to playcentre on Friday and fed my baby in front of a group of people and I think it was the first time that I didn't feel self conscious. When I had my first son  I thought all the breastfeeding stuff was a bit frivolous, but it really makes a difference to how you feel I reckon. So anyway, just wanted to say thanks......these t-shirts will probably be worn to shreds and may have to look at getting more. I have a wedding in a few weeks, so might look at something for that.

Haba

I was at the Parent and Child show over the weekend.  I wasn’t focused on selling product this year, I just wanted to take the time to talk to customers and introduce me and my brand. The good thing about writing this blog is that I can type it – I have absolutely no voice left!!!
I felt so proud having a stand and have really come full circle over the past 5 years, here is how:
  • Year 1 – I visited the show with my friend Anna and we left our babies at home with their dads
  • Year 2 – I visited the show with friend Anna, and put pamphlets on windscreens in the carpark (naughty and very tacky!!)
  • Year 3- I had a small stand and tried to sell too many products.  My mum was a helper
  • Year 4 – I had a small stand and tried to sell PJs and Nighties.  It was a rushed and chaotic experience and I couldn’t give customers the time they needed.
  • Year 5 – Had a larger stand.  Did Christchurch and Auckland shows.  No products to sell just an online sale for 2 weeks after.  Friend Anna was a paid helper, (along with Kelly, Margo, and Jacquie).  Just have come full circle with Anna after we had visited the show together as spectators.
It was also a great time to meet up with other business owners, it’s the closest thing that I have to a “work do”.
My neighbour at the stand was Lisa from www.bebabo.co.nz, it was a delight to meet her and share a few ideas.
She was kind enough to also give me a wooden Haba baby rattle, which I said I would put up on Facebook to do as a prize.  (so there you go, I’m sourcing new prizes for ya!!  More to come….)
Please do check out Lisa’s website and she has a store in Newmarket up near the warehouse.

First Day at School

Written at 9.12am

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

We dropped Lochie off at preschool as per normal, and then Angus ran through his old room at Treetown and said hi to all his friends.  It was a zooming run through visit because we didn’t want to be late for his first day at real school.

So my boy and I drove together to primary school.  We were going to play on the monkey bars before the bell rang (as one of the preschool teachers had told me it would be a good idea to get to school early and play beforehand to get rid of a lot of his energy!).  But the bars were wet so we went into the classroom together and looked at all the children’s artwork.

Teacher started a morning song for Mat Time, and about 2 minutes later I went up to Angus who was sitting on the edge of the mat and said “I’m going to go now”.  He said “okay bye mum”

Gave him a wave through the window, he had a great big grin.

We now have a school boy.

I thought it was going to be a lot more difficult than that, he is a sensitive wee chap but is obviously ready for this change

They have to be picked up today at 2pm cos of some teacher meeting, so lucky I have flexible work hours!

Breastfeeding & Ministry of Health

I’m involved with the Ministry of Health’s “Breastfeeding Campaign” in New Zealand.  You might have seen some of the adverts on TV and in magazines.

The next phase of their project is using social media, and creating a 2-way communication with NZ mothers.  The emphasis is that breastfeeding is a normal part of life.

It would be fantastic if you could please spread the word to your contacts, and come and join yourself.

The page has just started (after weeks of discussion and approvals!)  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Breastfeeding-NZ/193386893968

Interesting Day

Well its been a whirlwind few days since I found out that I won the Supreme Small Business Award (details here)

I drove up to Auckland and had a very interesting 2 hour meeting at the airport with some people that had flown up from Wellington to meet me.  It was so nice and refreshing driving 90 minutes each way in a car with no children, and no children’s music.

V.v.v Exciting.  More details to follow shortly.  I will be needing your help

Real Mothers Talk about Breastfeeding

My new goal of running my Breastmates website is to prepare people with the truth – and not unrealistically high expectations.  And to provide support for whichever way they choose to feed their baby.

I just hope people can find the information they need, and I’m trying to get the support for them!

The following is a list of stories that real mothers have shared with us.  I have only removed their names and have not edited any other information.

If you would like to share a couple of paragraphs about anything baby related, please email me

HOTmilk Bra Design Features

HOTmilk always ensures the following standards are met for every bra they design:

  • No underwire. This is because underwires can restrict the growth changes in breast size and shape during pregnancy, and restrict milk flow during breast feeding.
  • Soft cotton linings ensure absolute comfort and support.
  • Seam construction ensures no rubbing or chaffing. This is important especially in the cup as the nipple area can be very tender.
  • Easy maternity clips which you can use with one hand as you will probably not have both hands free at the time.
  • Strong power elastane in the back panels for extra support. This type of fabric ensures you get the best fit.
  • Wider bra straps and back adjusters for larger sizes. Larger cup sizes must have the best support possible especially at the breast feeding stage as the breasts will be heavier.
  • 6 rows of eyes at the back provides expansion in the diaphragm.
  • Fabrics and laces are carefully chosen to provide maximum support and comfort.
  • Exquisite matching underwear
  • Beautiful feminine styling in line with European trends and we make sure every attention to detail is met.

You can order all of the HOTmilk Bra styles from our webstore, we ship worldwide and can help you find what you need. Visit our store here:

Breast Cancer

This is the latest Breast Cancer advert that I saw in a recent magazine.  It is quite a shocking advert, but I like it.  I think it shows perfectly the intimacy of breastfeeding,  the loss when mothers cant breastfeed, and it highlights that breast cancer can affect young mothers too.  Not just older ladies – which is a very good point to make to me in particular.  I always just think of it happening to older women, not people my age.

It made me feel very very sad seeing this picture, but the marketing aspect worked because it really got my attention.

Spiderman's pet snails

Spiderman is home with me today, and we have a new collection of pet snails.... Spiders were to scary for him to catch.

Don't worry, no snails escaped into the knicker orders when I was packing parcels :-)

Buy online with Credit Card

We now have our own secure page to process credit cards directly, so don’t need to use Paypal anymore.

If you are shopping for maternity products online at Breastmates, just choose if you want to pay with credit card, internet banking, or cheque when you get to the Shopping Cart section.

Most people prefer to pay with their credit card, but there are still a few customers that like to use banking or mail a cheque.  That’s absolutely fine.  It will just take an extra day or two for your payment to be confirmed and for me to send out your order.

Protected Now

You may think it is fairly obvious that I ask people not to copy my website text or images.  But I now have to state this on every single page of my website, so you'll have to excuse the COPYSCAPE logo which is now on each page of my website.  I need to make it really obvious to these people that steal my IP.

The vast majority of product descriptions that you read on my website are my own words, that I use to personalize my store, because I know about the products I sell.  And of course the articles are all my own words, unless a guest author has contributed something for me - and then it is clearly stated.  Some of the images are provided by suppliers, but I then edit them to suit my own website layout which takes alot of time to do all that.  So its not nice when someone just copies them all from me!

I've now had THREE occasions where I've had to contact competitor businesses to notify them I was aware they had copied my stuff.  It is so easy for me to find copied pages using web tools!

From now on, I'm going to send a cease and desist letter when this happens and I will contact their website host to notify them of the copying.

Thank goodness Daylight Savings has started here in NZ. Every year I have good intentions of re-programming my children so that they adjust to a new bed time beforehand but it never happens. So just remember that you're not alone when your children won't go to sleep. (My eldest has only just shut his eyes!!)

Thanks for checking out my new website recently, and all your feedback. If you do happen to find any spelling mistakes please let me know! I am really focusing on Breastmates for Boob and Bottle Feeding support for you as well as a store. So if you do have a story or some tips you would like to share with other parents, please contact me.

Please take advantage of Free Delivery on all orders over $100 (for a limited time)

Speaking of lingerie, will have some exclusive news to share with you next month.....

Do you know about Kids New Zealand Directory? It's a resource for all Kiwi families full of info on family things and discounts. They are looking for great photos of kiwi kids to include in the Directory. If you have a photo of your child that you'd like to be considered for publication please click here.

Mumcho PonchosBreastmates is a finalist in the David Awards for Small Business 2009. It was a worthwhile task just doing the application as I had to sit down and assess my business, so exciting news to be a finalist. Thank you to each and everyone who knows about my little website. Will find out on 7th October.

Thanks for reading, and enjoy your BBQ season

Orders from Russia

My friend Mr Google told me about this comment someone had made about Breastmates today.  I was interested enough to look, but it was all in Russian.  So found a free translation thing.  I think some of the actual text got lost in translation, like "Kangaroo" instead of Australian.  Funny!

I've been sending HOTmilk everywhere!

Buying Bras Online

Here is some feedback that I received today from a customer that has regularly purchased HOTmilk bras at my online store.

She says “Just to let you know I appreciate your website because it can be difficult finding sizes and spending time searching the shops with little one in tow only to be disappointed. Going through all those pregnancy changes it is great being able to measure and then send away for the right size, it only takes minutes. I am also very happy with the comfort and quality of your product.

Engorged Breasts

Engorged Breasts

what they look like and how to treat

This photo shows perfectly what an engorged breast looks like, compared to a normal breastfeeding breast. You can see that one boob (the one of the left) is very full and rounded. Its like it has a huge silicone implant, although it is actually just full of milk. This would be really painful! You can see in the photo, how the breast on the left is full and is very round. its sitting higher than the empty breast on the right hand side. The treatment we suggested was a hot shower and massage just to ease out a little of the milk from the engorged breast. Then she tried some heat packs.
If the pain had been unbearable for her, then she could have expressed some milk out with a breast pump. But remember this important thing I am going to tell you: if you express milk to relieve the pressure, it will also mean that your breasts will make more milk ready for a few hours time, which just would have repeated the engorgement problem later in the day. Using a breast pump to relieve engorged breasts should really be a last case resort, because your breasts will make milk depending on the volume that is being withdrawn, as if baby were drinking.

We do have lots of remedies, equipment and help for breastfeeding at our webstore Breastmates- you can view the store here: Breastmates Store

Pregnant Belly at 39 Weeks

Because I was having a planned c-section for my second baby (due to complications first time round) we knew the date and time to be at the hospital.

This really is a picture of me and bump waiting to get ready for theatre. (39 weeks pregnant)

Yes it really was the baby, not a ball.

My second pregnancy my tummy was a lot more compact, but my baby was actually bigger. He was 8 pounds 5 ounces. I had a lot of back pain during this pregnancy as the baby was so close to my back!

Its handy having an online maternity store when I’m a mum!

Nappies

Even though I don't sell nappies (just nappy creams and diaper bags at my online store) people seem to ask me questions about them.   Probably because they know that I'm a mum and that I'll answer their enquiry.

Regardless of whether you use cloth nappies or disposable nappies, the main thing that the nappies are easy to use, and do not leak.

You are going to be changing nappies every 3 or 4 hours. When baby is newborn, you'll get into the routine of feeding from one breast, burping, change nappy, and then feeding from the other breast.   So that will be around 4 hourly during the feeding cycle - and extra if they poop.

When they start sleeping through the night, luckily nappy changing frequency will reduce.  And when they get older too, the time is reduced.  But there will be a lot of nappies!!!!  For a couple of years!!!!!  That thought was daunting to me when I was a new mum!

With my first son I used cloth nappies (I am a greenie after all).  With cloth nappies, things have been modernised nowadays so you don't need big flat squares nor pins.  These days its all about convenience and ease of use. Nappies have really been re-invented now with improvements in fabrics and snap systems rather than pins. There are a couple of systems you can go for:

  • Breathable waterproof overnap, which you put  in Prefolds (folded up absorbent cotton layers)
  • Pocket Nappy  (which you stuff with absorbent prefolds)
  • All-in-One  (this has the waterproof layer and the absorbent layer all sewed together.  This one looks most like a disposable, but they do take longer to dry.

There are a number of different brands available, and it can get quite confusing when you are researching.  But all the nappy options and brands will come down to the 3 functions that i described above.

A great place to do research is http://www.thenappynetwork.org.nz  This website also has a really good forum with thousands of helpful mums to answer your questions.

I personally used Overnaps with prefolds on the inside, and also Pocket Nappies.  I liked the Pocket Nappies as the brand that I used could be adjusted to fit from birth to toddler.

A good store that I would love to recommend to you is Pippa's http://www.snazzipants.co.nz  (if you visit her online or store please tell her that Breastmates referred you!)

When my second son was born, the advantage of cloth nappies is that I could reuse them all again and not have to purchase.  But when he was born, my business got a lot busier, and I struggled to keep up with my normal washing let alone nappies too.  So I use a mix of cloth and disposables.

So just like breast vs boob, and cloth vs disposable I've done both :-)

Candles By Design

I was recently informed about a fantastic website called candlesbydesign.  Actually the store owner Brigitte emailed me, as we had a mutual contact with Verve Eastside Magazine in Auckland.  She wrote me a very complimentary email, and so the least I can do is a promotion on my blog for her!

Check out her gorgeous website, you will be as surprised as me!

The special candle website  is http://www.candlesbydesign.co.nz

If you visit please tell Brigitte that you were referred by Breastmates

Feeding baby with a cold

It can be a really difficult time if your darling new baby has a cold.

When babies are healthy, they can breathe through their nose while continuing to suck and nurse at the breast (or bottle).  This is a natural instinct that babies are born with, but they will grow out of it.  (have you ever tried to breathe and swallow at the same time - not possible!)

So when a baby has a cold, their sinus can be blocked up.  This means that they won't remain latched on at the breast for a long time, because they will need to breathe through their mouth.  You may find that baby will take a few sucks, then come off the latch. (and milk might squirt as your letdown continues!).  This will mean that it will take longer to feed your baby, they could get very impatient as they are obviously hungry but can't get to their milk fast enough. A few tears and stress too!

Doctors often suggest getting Saline Drops.  If you squirt a few up baby's nose just before a feed, then the liquid helps to loosen the mucus.  Then when baby is feeding, it forces the mucus to clear and go down the back of their throat.  And sometimes you might get a a snot deposit on your boob!

Your baby may also be very noisy and snuffley.

The stop-start feeding motion may also mean that you feel a little engorged.  But it is really important that you empty your breast after feeding.  The breast that does not get fully emptied after the feed will be the one that you offer first to baby next time.

Some parents also get room vapourisers, or they might put a little dash of "Vicks" on the baby's pillowcase to help breathing also.

If your baby's cold doesn’t improve within 24 hours, then I would suggest you talk to your doctor or midwife.

Breastmates Relaunches Today

1 September 2009   my latest press release....

Boob or Bottle?

New Zealand webstore Breastmates.co.nz has relaunched this week, with the focus to provide real information for parents on infant feeding.

Breastmates was created from scratch in 2004 by Frances McInnes, who has slowly developed the brand herself over the past few years to become a Specialty Baby Feeding Store with an extensive range of products for pregnant and new mothers.

Frances noted there was a lack of resources for mothers in New Zealand on baby feeding issues, and that it could often be difficult for people to get advice for their situation.

Frances has taken it upon her self to fill this void. Frances is a mother who has both breast and bottle fed her two children, and has been told that customers like her “non-militant non-judgmental” stance on breastfeeding.

After considerable time and investment, Breastmates relaunches this week as a useful resource for parents as well as an online shopping site. “I wanted my website to consist of honest information to prepare people with the truth – and not unrealistically high expectations. I can be the person that tells you ‘yes breastfeeding is hard, but if you can’t do it then forget the guilt trip ”

Breastmates will now fill the need for information on infant feeding, and provides a balance between breast and bottle feeding.

There are over 250 articles on relevant topics including videos, photographs and demonstration contributed from an extensive network of midwives, specialists, as well as mothers sharing their experiences.

Frances hopes that she will be able to reach more people with her new website, and help them “just a little bit” during what can often be stressful times.

Birth Control

Breastfeeding is sometimes used as a method of birth control.

  • But only if baby is exclusively breastfeed (i.e nothing other than breastmilk is given to your child)
  • Only if baby is under six month’s of age
  • Only if mother’s menstrual cycle has not yet started back again after labour

This method is not 100% reliable. You could still get pregnant even if you are breastfeeding as ovulation can occur before your period starts back.

A more reliable method of birth control is the "mini-pill" contraceptive prescribed by your doctor which is a progestogen-only pill .

Avoid contraceptive pills containing oestrogen while you are breastfeeding.

For more information, you may be best to speak with your doctor or midwife.  A midwife can usually prescribe contraception (pills and condoms) while you are still under her care, when baby is under six months.

Extended Breastfeeding

An extreme example of extended breastfeeding.

To be viewed with a little humour!!

Grown man still breastfeeding, and enjoying some Boobie Juice. Watch how this grown man still nurses from his mother. This was actually a comedy skit that screened on TV last night. I just thought it was funny. No offense intended.

Lactation Consultant Auckland

A friend of mine recently sent me this email, rather appropriate I think:

"I think I ended up with the best lactation consultant ever! I had mastitis on and off for the first 4 months of my first boy, and then this time I got Trish to help me out - she got my large milk supply completely under control and has taught me how to deal with blocked ducts. She does home consulations and clinic Trish Warder (Mobile xx). Also she is really practical and helps out with what is best for you!"

I haven't put her mobile phone number on this blog post just for privacy reasons with weirdos. But if you are in Auckland and trying to find a lactation consultant, just let me know and I can refer you.

Raynauds Syndrome and Nipple Vasospasms

What is Raynaud's? is a condition when blood vessels spasm and constrict in body extremities such as nipples. When Reynaud's Phenomenon causes nipple vasospam, the nipple turns white and there is usually a noticeable change in colour from white to blue to red, as blood flow returns.

It can occur during pregnancy and at times related to feeding. Cold temperatures typically trigger the vasospasm and make it worse. It is a very painful experience.

One common treatment is to keep the breast and
nipples warm.

We have a wonderful new product, Breastwarmers, which are purposely designed for mothers that suffer from nipple vasospasms. The Breastwarmers reflect your body heat, which can help ease the pain. Plus they can also absorb milk leaks, and are reusable breast pads.

Breastwarmers can be used by women with Raynaud’s Phenomenon, to boost milk supply due to the warmth that is provided to milk ducts, and to help with let-down or expressing. They can also be worn by women that suffer from nipple vasospasm (chilled nipples) who are not breastfeeding.

For more information about this product, and to order, please view our main webstore here: http://www.breastmates.co.nz/breastwarmers.html

Nursing Necklace

I've got these fab new Nursing Necklaces in stock, which are the ideal thing to use when you have a "nosey" baby that you are trying to breastfeed or bottle feed. You know how babies get distracted with noise (and other siblings), turn their head, and pull. And Don't drink their milk?

Well this little necklace is a
nursing necklace pendant that mum wears. baby can focus on the colour contrast, touch and feel, and just keep drinking their milk!

Nursing necklaces are a nifty little invention! Plus because it is made from safe materials etc, it can also double as a chewable interest too (after you've finished feeding)

You can order your HeartString Nursing Necklace from Breastmates

Breastfeeding DVD

A DVD about breastfeeding is currently in development and will be available in New Zealand to every pregnant woman in their third trimester from about November 2009.

In the
DVD, a number of New Zealand mothers will talk about their experiences of breastfeeding. The DVD, which will have input from breastfeeding experts, will provide a useful tool for mothers (as well as partners and family/whānau) wanting to know more about the rewards and challenges of breastfeeding. While it will be modelled on the structure and information in the British DVD From Bump to Breastfeeding, the DVD will present an entirely New Zealand perspective.

Very cool - we like this

Medela Power Adapter

Yes we do sell the Adapters for the Medela breast pumps.

Though please note that if you have travelled from overseas and would like to use your breast pump in New Zealand you must purchase a power adapter first!!! We have these at our store Breastmates.

IF you use the Breast Pump in NZ with your overseas adaptor it could damage the inside of your motor due to our different power frequency.

If you have tried to use it in NZ already, the motor will be broken already.

So get the medela pump adapter first!!

Belly Bra Tummy Support

A lady had some questions about the BellyBra we sell at our online store.

"I was referred by my midwife to buy a belly bra as I have a lot of trouble with my pelvis
as this is also my fouth pregnancy. I am only four months and already I am feeling the
problems. Will the
belly bra carry me right through my pregnancy? I am usually a size
14-16 pre-pregnancy. "

I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you have been having with your pelvis. I had the same problem with my second son and personally found the
belly bra great!!! It really does support your back and belly.

Yes the
BellyBra will take you right through your pregnancy, and will allow for growth as your belly grows too.

Breastfeeding Singlets for Winter

A customer recently asked me this question about our selection of breastfeeding singlets, suitable to be worn in winter.

Which of your products do you recommend more – the hot milk cammie, or the breast feeding singlet. Just want to put something underneath my tops, so I don’t need to bare all over the winter. Is it ok to wear your bf bras under these singlets?

breastfeeding singlet breastfeeding singlet

For the purpose she had described I would actually recommend the Glamourmum tops the most. They are nice and fitted, and are a slim design so they are the perfect undergarment for nursing. Yes you can still wear bras under these aswell. The Glamourmum tops are really suitable to wear under most clothing, whereas the hotmilk cammie wouldn't be ideal under fitted tops in my opinion.

HOTmilk in States

This is some feedback from a customer in the States that was recently purchasing on our website. She was looking at the HOTmilk lingerie range, we have this on display for sale here: http://www.breastmates.co.nz/hotmilk.htm

I'm hoping I love the fit of the bras as much as I love the look. This is my second baby and I refuse to wear the ugly nursing bras this time!

Baby Bottle and Formula - When you are Out

I asked a question on my facebook page the other day about how mothers do the whole formula feeding, storage, transportation when they are out and about. There is very little information about how to actually do bottle feeding, because I think health professionals are so worried about breaking the code on WHO breastfeeding rules. But surely people should be told how to feed formula and how to store bottles when you go out, you wouldnt want babies to get sick from drinking formula that was stored wrong etc would you? No one would carry around a warm bottle of cow milk rather than putting it in the fridge right?!

So here is what happened on my facebook page (which you can join here)

I wrote "Hi, I am doing mum-research today. If are formula feeding and you go out, how do you take your powder and water? There are many different ways, please share how you do it? eg. powder in a container & hot water that cools by the time you need it. or Powder and water mixed and kept cool, then you warm it. ... etc "

Reply 1: I'm not a formula feeder, but those I know all seem to bring bottles of pre-boiled water and measured powder separately. Everyone seems to mix the powder into the water before or without heating.

Reply 2: I use a Thermos every day, fill it up with my morning cuppa and it will do a day of feeds, saves power time and is easy if i have to go out i just chuck it in the nappy bag with the powder in a bottle then add hot and cold as i need.

Reply 3: ziplock bag of premeasured powder, bottle of cooled boiled water. and fed to baby at room temp.

Reply 4: Phil & Ted's offers a bottle that holds the water and formula seperatey, and all you have to do is twist it a bit to mix the 2.. its prety cool. But if your baby is fussy on their botle teat, it may not work well for you.

Reply 5: That is one cool bottle! I breast and formula feed. When we go out I will take a bottle of pre mix and another bottle of then boiling water and formula seperate.

Reply 6: I had a Phil and Ted one and it was Crap!! the water and formula NEVER mixed properly. It always leaked. I should have taken it back but unfortunitely got it at a show and couldn't remember the name of the store I purchased it from. I don't recommend it!! You know there aren't many resources out there for formula feeding, considering how many there, are so good on you for posing the question!

Reply 7: I fill my bottles up with pre-boiled water and have a formula dispenser which holds 3 lots of measured powder then add to bottle when a feed is needed :)

Reply 8: Take them out mixed and frosty. He likes his milk cold!

Reply 9: I take powder and get water from cafe :)

Reply 10: I take boiled water in a bottle in a drawstring thermos pouch and then when it's at the right temp and bubs is hungry then I add the formula. I take the forumula in a tomee tippee container which has 3 separate compartments and you just turn the lid and tip it out. If it's a bit hot and bubs is really hungry then I just add some cold water from a cafe. I exclusively breastfed for 5 months and then had to top up with formula from then on. I had to switch to fully formula fed at 9 months. I thought it was going to be a huge hassle going out and about formula feeding instead of the instantly breastfeeding. But it hasn't been too bad at all. :-) You do what is best for you and baby and this is what works for us.

Reply 11: Oh boy - sounds like a lot of hassle to me!! Glad mine is all attached, mixed and just the right temperature when required :-)

So there you go. Hopefully if you find this blog post, it is because you need information, and I have hopefully answered it for yoU!!

Nut and Bee

I stumbled across a lovely blog website recently, with some gorgeous little illustration prints.

I ordered a notepad, as I do get a lot of orders from my website where I wrap the gift and send it directly to the recipient. This is a nice little note pad to write those messages on. I chose this picture becuase it is cute with the child and the bear, and suitable for my product line too.

She has some lovely designs, so do check out her site.

The prices are in $US but it is defintely a NZ site.

HOTmilk Online

This is another one of the new HOTmilk styles that we unloaded today. This is available in small cup sizes from 8A cup to 16F. With matching french knickers and bikini briefs.

Don't you just LOVE the imagery settings that HOTmilk use in their campaigns! So cute!

This is a very light lemon colour, almost pastel lemon is a way to describe it. A very pretty HOTmilk bra with moulded cups and lace. For more details and images, close ups etc, go to our webstore http://www.breastmates.co.nz/hotmilk.htm

New HOTmilk Styles

Well I had a busy day here at the business today, I had a tonne of new HOTmilk stock arrive. So lots of unpacking and re-arranging. I think my courier driver Tim was surprised by the sheer number of boxes that he dropped off this morning, and then ALL the parcels that were packed and wrapped for him to collect this afternoon.

A very busy day!

The
new styles of HOTmilk are just scrummy. This HOTmilk "Her Playfulness was Captivating" style is a very soft pink, it has a moulded cup which is seam free and has been cut and moulded in one piece. This is PERFECT for under white tops etc, so you "dont smuggle tic-tacs" which means you dont have nipples showing through your clothing on a cold day!

Its quite a baby doll pastel pink colour, and comes with a matching bikini knicker, also low seam showage.

This is one of the first NICE designs of
nursing bra that is available in the tshirt cup style.

Do check out more of this HOTmilk Bra on our website, we have other images and close ups to show you.

Be a Star Breastfeeding Campaign in Britain

I recently came across a Breastfeeding Promotional campaign in Britain, where young mums have been photographed in beautiful poses with funky make up and clothes, while breastfeeding their baby.

The aim is give breastfeeding a trendier image amongst new mums in areas where rates fall way below the Government health targets. By raising awareness of the benefits to both mum and baby, health officials are hoping the model mums will help turn the tide from bottle to breast.

I was just blogging about it today, how in the UK breastfeeding is not so widely accepted as here in NZ. (see post here)

But a campaign like this in New Zealand would certainly be beneficial.

I congratulate the people in Britain that have organised this, the creators, the photographers and stylists, and the beautiful mums and their babies!!

Well done, and good luck with your campaign!! It should certainly help breastfeeding appeal to mothers !

You can see more information about Be a Star here: http://www.beastar.org.uk/

Free Stuff

Today I had a pile of old baby stuff that I wanted to get rid of, before we move to our beautiful new home next month. I had some large things like an exersaucer, baby bath, and carseat.

There are 3 opshops in our new town in the Waikato, but I thought I would choose the one that is run by Hospice. Since my beautiful young sister inlaw died just a few months ago to the nasty old cancer, I am going to support hospice with my donations and shop there too. Plus it is right next to the bakery with nice chicken rolls and donuts, so I got lunch too.

Well, anyway, my story is. Just as I was about to walk into the hospice opshop with a big pile of baby things, a lady with a big pregnant belly walked out. I said to her "oh do you need some baby stuff". And she did. So the stuff didn't even make it into the opshop. She was pleased to get free baby stuff too!!

The funny thing was that she was parked right next to my car. She noticed the Breastmates branding on my car and asked if I was Frances. Small world huh!!

She was very pleased with the items, and I was thrilled to be able to give them away and clear some junk!!

HOTmilk Ireland

Another customer in Ireland, recently came back to our maternity products store to buy some more items.

Hi Frances, Our new arrival has been keeping us busy but I'm delighted with the Hot Milk nursing bra's and pj's that I bought from you. It's given me a little lift to know that I can have something pretty still :) Thanks for the milkman boxers offer - can I order the large size please? (these are some free HOTmilk milkman boxers for you guy) Just to let you know that I recommended your website to some friends so you might be getting some enquiries from the Emerald Isle. Take care,Nicola

I always like it when customers email me, even if they are all they from Ireland. Isn't the interent great!!

Wellington Maternity

A customer recently ordered some products from our online maternity store, she is in Wellington.

She wrote back to me:

Hi Frances,
Thank you for sending the order so quickly. It was here in less than a day!

Now I can't take the credit for her fast delivery, must just be a good courier company (or just that day at least!!)

Chu Chu Teat

Would the chuchu teat fit on my avent bottles?

No the chu chu teat wont fit avent, it only fits narrow neck bottles. (Like tommee tippee - but not the tommee tippee closer to nature ones)

Breastfeeding Rates

I was talking to someone the other day, about how good NZ women are at Breastfeeding. It really is considered the norm over here, and most people are comfortable breastfeeding and breastfeeding in public.

The midwives and hospitals here promote breastfeeding so much, and formula is pretty much taboo. The health staff here actually cannot tell people anything about formula due to the WHO rules. Which of course makes things extremly difficult if you are in this situation, so contact us and we can help answer your questions. I'm a mum myself!!

Did you know that Ireland is still years behind. Apparently the hospital midwives push formula on everyone, including breastfeeding mums. It totally undermines new mums. It seems to be a policy to give a newborn formula . They also still give out free samples of formula. There is a small but determined movement growing to make changes but as formula is so the norm, and breastfeeders have such a poor image there they have a long way to go.

Maybe my business Breastmates should spread wings to the Emerald Isle? What can I do to help from here?

Baby Wont Take Bottle

A recent question from a customer of mine:

Baby Wont Take Bottle
Baby is 4 months. I have been trying him with the bottle of expressed milk for over a month, about 20mls of expressed milk 1-2 times everyday. On the floor in my arms, with someone else giving it to him, when he is hungry when he isn’t and he jolly well wont take it. he can as he has sucked about 30mls all in one go about 3 times but as soon as I take the bottle out of his mouth and try again, screaming and pulling away and out comes the breast. I have tried Avent and Tommy Tippee teats. I have almost given up. And so I thought of you…any suggestions of miracle teats or other techniques to try?

So I answered:

With regards to the feeding, I know what a pain and concern it can be when a baby wont take a bottle.

Have a look at this
teat, it is a special one called a Chu Chu that works exactly like the breast. So baby has to work the same way to get the milk out, rather than just having the milk pour out like with the avent and tommee tippee teats. Maybe when your baby was drinking from these other teats, he got the milk flow when he started but he didn’t like the rate that it came out.

You can see this
special teat on the website here: http://www.breastmates.co.nz/chu_chu_teats.html

Also, have you tried him
drinking a bottle of water, using the same teat. Then you can check whether it is the teat or not.

Nursing Reminders

I was emailing my friend Bridget today, and she wrote something funny.

She says "Oh, I forgot to tell you something nice - My friend Claire has just had a baby and we were sitting chatting and I had given her the mothers minders bracelet (nursing reminder) that I got off you. Anyway she was telling me how she had seen them on a website and then bought some beautiful lingerie off the lady and how great it was to go to your house to try them on etc. I thought, hmmm that sounds like Fran and it was! Her name is Claire Xname removedX and is one very happy customer. She actually used to play with your husband and his sister when they were little living in Howick. Small, small world. Bridget :)

HOTmilk USA

My repeating customer in New York wrote back to me today, after I said I should deliver her parcel to her in the States. Wouldn't that be nice. But alas, to the post office instead.

She writes: "My new bra (HOTmilk) is definitely so much more comfortable than any others I've tried. Am sure NZ is more beautiful than New York and at least you have clean air and less swine flu!!"

We actually have a few probable cases of Swine flu this week, after some students returned from Mexico. My husband thinks it is the pharmaceutical companies trying to sell more medicines during a recession, they started a story.

HOTmilk Australia

A customer recently purchased some HOTmilk items from my online website, she is based in Australia so it was great for her to take advantage of our sale prices and exchange rate prices. Even with the cost of shipping it was cheaper for her to purchase HOTmilk from us in New Zealand rather than from her local store.

The parcel was sent on 26th April, and today 4th May, she says:

Hi Frances,
Package arrived on Friday last week and
pyjamas are fabulous.
Thanks for an efficient service!
Cheers, Zoe.

Sunday News

Bras for Africa
The Sunday News picked up on our bra story which was also on Stuff.co.nz and the Waikato Times last week as part of the Knickers for Africa programme.

I think a lot of people will be doing google searches for me and Knickers for Africa this week, as unfortunately the article didnt specify any contact details. So I dont know how they were meant to know where to send the bras!!

Anyone can contact me via my website here: http://www.breastmates.co.nz

Thank you

Breast Pump Hire

I read a short article in our Waikato newspaper last week, which said that the third breast pump is missing from Waikato Hospital's newborn intensive care unit.

"The $3000 breast pump was taken between 7pm Tuesday and 10am Wednesday. Police are investigating and looking at closed circuit television coverage. On Christmas Eve last year, thieves took two breast pumps from the unit. Two breast pumps that were in storage and due for mothballing are now being used by mothers in the ward."

Its sad for a mother of a newborn baby, under a stressful time, but good on her for breastfeeding and going to the effort of expressing milk. Its just weird that the breast pump got stolen.

It was probably the medela symphony breast pump. The Symphony pump is about the only $3000 breast pump available, its a real premium one made by medela. They are about $100 a month to hire one.

Hire pumps are shown here: http://www.breastmates.co.nz/Medela_Breast_Pump_hire.html

Waikato Times

A reporter came yesterday from the Waikato Times who had picked up on the Bras for Africa story. He had never seen so many bras in his life! We made a bra mountain and took a photo.

The story was in the newspaper today, and has also been on the front page of Stuff.co.nz. Also today I've had 4 phone calls from Radio Hosts who have interviewed me over the phone about it all!

A friend of mine just told me on Facebook that she had heard me talking on ZM. She said

"Hiya, you def did NOT sound like a dork!! Sounded professional and compassionate! and like someone who was on the radio a lot, was brilliant" Phew that is so reassuring. I always think I sound so squeaky when recorded. And I didn't know they had been recording until after!

Must be not much happening in the world today for this to make news! But thanks, and thanks everyone for the bras.

breast-feeding tops

Another customer who ordered some breast-feeding clothes says

My breast-feeding top arrived in today’s mail. I just wanted to say thank you – it’s really lovely, the size is perfect and looks like it will be very practical. You never know exactly what you’re going to get when you order online sight unseen, so I’m really thrilled! Thanks again, Kathy

And for other customers that are thinking about purchasing from our online store, then rest assured that if you order but don't like it when it arrives, you are welcome to return it.

Breastfeeding Tops Australia

Some lovely feedback from another customer in Australia. Her parcel took 5 days to arrive. This lady purchased some breastfeeding tops.

The first order came really quickly and the tops are great thank you, hence ordering more.
I showed a couple other mums the
casual zip top which they thought was fantastic so have given your web site out. I also have a coffee group meet up next week which I'm going to show your tops at because I've been telling them about them as well.
Your
nursing tops are good quality and the casual T-shirts are a reasonable price compared to other retailers, especially for new mums who have gone down to one income. I'm sure my coffee group will be keen to get some.
Many thanks again,

Breast-Feeding Cushion

Some more feedback that I just received from a customer who ordered a nursing cushion from my NZ webstore. You can see our range of nursing pillows here: http://www.breastmates.co.nz/pillows.htm

Thanks for the great breast-feeding cushion, the BabyFirst one. It is taking a lot of the strain off my shoulders now that my baby is getting a bit heavier. The roll bars are great, that extra bit of security is fantastic. Also like that it clips around the waist so that the cushion can't move away from my body. Thanks for a great product. Nicola

Order from Australia

Some lovely feedback from a customer in Australia:

Hi Frances – you offer a very efficient and personal service and I think your business deserves to succeed and flourish. My parcel of HOTmilk arrived this morning. I’m really impressed with the speed of your service and will be letting my Mother’s Group friends know about you!
Kind regards
Megan

My business is www.breastmates.co.nz

It makes my day to get a lovely message like this :-)

Super Size your Breast Pump? No

Someone told me today that they have been reading my blog, and she says

"There’s one post in particular where you tell a woman about the various breastpumps, and tell her she’d be better with what would be the cheaper single electric pump. That post speaks volumes about you, and how you care about your clients more than the profit margins..."

Yes that is true, I would hate for someone to purchase the
wrong breast pump from me and find they they had spent too much money when they only needed a small pump rather than a turbo one. 'tis all part of the service.

Pump Battery Cover

A question from a customer

Hi there,
I have a
Madela Mini breast pump and have lost the battery cover - can you let me know if it is possible to get one - if so how much would it be.
Regards

No sorry unfortunately we don’t sell the battery cover for mini electric as a spare part. We do have spare parts for all other parts of the medela equipment, its just the pump battery cover for the mini electric is not sold as a spare. Sorry!
